Grapes prefer a moderate to heavy fertile soil with good drainage. Grapes can tolerate some dryness after the first year, but during the first year they should be kept moist. Every Spring we suggest applying a balanced fertilizer.
Plant grape vines in early spring or winter in full sun and facing south, if possible. Space each plant about eight feet apart to give them room to grow. When planting, we suggest pruning back top growth to two or three buds. You may also prune the roots to avoid root clumps in the planting hole. You can prune your grapes at any time from December through February.
Most grape vines will produce an occasional fruit bunch the first year and will put on a good crop the second year if it gets full sun exposure.
