Health Benefits

Both berries host a wide ranges of health benefits. Currants, especially black currants, are a powerhouse of benefits! They are high in antioxidants, vitamin C, protein, fiber, and many other vitamins and minerals including magnesium and potassium. Currants are delicious in jams, juices, sauces, mixed with other fruit, and dried.

Gooseberries have similar benefits as currants, they are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, and magnesium. They are also fat-free, cholesterol free, and low in calories. Since these berries are on the tart side of flavoring, they so best when used in sauces, mixed with other fruit, or in fruit desserts.

Growing Tips

Both plants grow easily in the Northwest and all over the west coast. In fact, there are some Ribes species that are native to our area! They are hardy plants that can survive well here. Plant them in fertile, well-drained soil and watch them thrive.
